5 Minute Sand Timer: A Calm Online Hourglass

Five Minutes of Falling Sand•Transitions & Tidy-Up•Gentle Finish Chime•Fullscreen for Classrooms

Five Minutes, One Glance

Five minutes is long enough to finish a small job and short enough that nobody loses interest. Watching sand slowly gather in the lower bulb helps children — and adults — understand that time is moving without anyone having to announce "four minutes left… three minutes left".

Put it on the classroom board during tidy-up, use it to give a child a warning before screen time ends, or let it run during a short breathing break at your desk. The steady stream of grains is pleasant to watch, which makes waiting feel shorter.

How to Use the 5 Minute Sand Timer

1

The hourglass is already loaded with 5 minutes of sand — or pick another preset or type your own time in m:ss.

2

Press Start (or the Spacebar) and the grains begin pouring through the narrow neck.

3

Watch the top bulb empty and the pile in the bottom bulb grow — no clock-reading needed.

4

A chime plays when the last grain lands. Press Reset (R) to flip the glass and go again.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do teachers use a 5 minute hourglass?

Common uses include clean-up countdowns, transition warnings between activities, timed partner discussions and short independent tasks. Showing the glass in fullscreen lets the whole room track it.

Does the sand timer help children with transitions?

Many parents and educators find that a visible, shrinking pile of sand makes upcoming changes easier to accept than a verbal warning, because the child can see the end approaching.

Is the virtual hourglass more accurate than a real one?

Yes. Physical sand glasses drift with humidity and grain size. The TimerBox hourglass is driven by the system clock, so it finishes on the exact second even if you switch tabs.

Which keyboard shortcuts work on the sand timer?

Space starts or pauses, R resets, F opens fullscreen and M mutes or unmutes the finishing chime.
