Never Burn the Bottom of the Popcorn Pot Again

Popcorn kernels contain a tiny droplet of water surrounded by hard starch. As oil heats the hull to 356°F (180°C), steam pressure explodes the kernel inside out.

Leaving the pot on the heat for even 15 seconds after popping slows down scorches the entire batch. Use our 3-minute timer and pull the pot off heat as soon as pops slow to 2 seconds apart.

How to Use the Popcorn Timer

1

Heat 2 tablespoons of high-smoke-point oil (coconut, avocado, or canola) in a heavy pot.

2

Add 3 test kernels. When they pop, add 1/2 cup of kernels and cover.

3

Start the 3-minute timer and gently shake the pot across the burner.

4

Remove from heat when pops slow to 2 seconds apart, dump into a bowl, and season.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does microwave popcorn burn easily?

Microwaves heat unevenly. Always rely on sound: when popping slows to 2 seconds between pops, stop the microwave regardless of remaining seconds.
